Chenrezig is a bodhisattva who goes by the name Avalokiteshvara in Mahayana Buddhism. Chenrezig is regarded as the Buddha of compassion par excellence. Chenrezig is especially revered in Tibetan Buddhism as Tibet's guardian bodhisattva. Chenrezig's Tibetan name means "the one who looks with an unwavering eye."
Chenrezig is sometimes shown with many limbs and heads, signifying his ability to assist several creatures at once. One of the most widely recognized depictions of Chenrezig is the four-armed figure, with each hand clutching a symbolic item such as a prayer bead, a lotus flower, a wish-fulfilling diamond, or a crystal mala.
Chenrezig devotees frequently say his mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum," in an effort to call forth the benefits of knowledge and compassion. The chant is said to be really effective.
