Manjushri is the revered Bodhisattva of Wisdom in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. His name means “Gentle Glory” or “Soft Radiance,” symbolizing the clear, penetrating light of awakened intelligence that cuts through ignorance and confusion.

Manjushri is most commonly depicted as a youthful, radiant figure, signifying the fresh, ever-renewing nature of true wisdom. In his right hand, he holds a flaming sword, which represents the power of wisdom to cut through illusion, ego, and misunderstanding. In his left hand, he holds a lotus flower supporting a sacred text (the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra)—the scripture of ultimate wisdom—symbolizing the union of insight and learning.

He is often shown seated on a snow lion, representing fearless confidence and mastery over the wild nature of the mind. His golden or orange body color reflects the brilliance of enlightened knowledge.

Manjushri is the embodiment of discerning wisdom, clarity of thought, eloquence, and deep understanding. Artists, students, scholars, and spiritual practitioners especially revere him for guidance in learning, creativity, and insight. His mantra is widely recited to cultivate intelligence and awareness:
“Om A Ra Pa Tsa Na Dhīḥ”
