Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru) is revered in this thangka as the embodiment of healing and compassionate care, seated beneath a dense flowering canopy whose sprawling roots extend outward across a rippling, water-like ground — as though the tree itself draws its restorative power from a living, flowing source beneath the earth. This visible network of roots, unusual in its prominence, reinforces the sense of deep-rooted healing and interconnected vitality central to Medicine Buddha practice.
A single soft pink halo, simpler than the layered halos seen in other Medicine Buddha depictions, glows quietly behind his deep blue form against the pale tree trunk. To one side, a delicate branch of small pink cherry-like blossoms adds a touch of seasonal freshness, while patches of cactus-like foliage grow among the roots at the base of the throne.
He holds the myrobalan medicinal plant and a bowl of healing nectar, reminding practitioners that true healing comes from both outer remedies and inner realization. This combination of exposed, water-touched roots and a simplified single halo offers a grounded, almost aquatic interpretation of healing energy, distinct from more celestial or sky-focused Medicine Buddha compositions.
Ideal for homes, clinics, meditation rooms, and sacred spaces, this handmade thangka creates a peaceful atmosphere and serves as a supportive visual aid for healing practice and mindful reflection.
P.S. This Medicine Buddha Thangka is painted taking references from Buddhist books following the correct iconography and by master artists, making it authentic traditional handmade Tibetan art. The subtle facial expression is one factor to distinguish the real effort put into creating this masterpiece.
